Arrow Season 4 Episode 19 : Canary Cry
Neha Pandey (Guest Author)
In Episode 18 of Arrow CW, Oliver and Diggle go after Malcolm to stop him from breaking Darhk out of prison, which turns out to be a ruse. Malcolm meanwhile invades the team’s lair and takes Darhk’s idol. Laurel is offered the DA’s position by Ruvé Adams. Oliver mistrusts Andy of working with H.I.V.E and threatens him to give up Darhk’s plan, which leads him to a row with Diggle. Darhk starts an uprising at Iron Heights and the team suits up. At the prison Andy reveals himself to be Darhk’s ally and gives him the missing piece of idol. Thea shoots arrows at Darhk which he uses to stab Laurel with. Oliver rushes Laurel to the hospital, where she later takes her last breath.
Episode 19 came with a lot of flashbacks and mind you they are not the boring ones we have been tolerating this entire season. The episode starts through a flashback, with Tommy Merlyn’s funeral(damn you show makers). In the flashback, Oliver is supposed to deliver Tommy’s eulogy but is not present at the funeral. Laurel in his absence however takes up the mantle in his stead.
Back at the bunker, Diggle beats himself for trusting Andy over Oliver, Oliver however asks him not to do so being the leading expert in the area. Meanwhile in the streets an illegal ammunition deal is taking place and Black Canary is seen stopping it.
Captain Lance took Laurel’s death pretty hard and goes into the Denial mode and after hearing of Black Canary incident starts thinking that Laurel might not really be dead and goes to seek the team’s help. Oliver finds out that Laurel’s sonic device is missing and takes Lance to the morgue to see Laurel lying there.
Another flashback is shown with Oliver telling Laurel, that he has failed Tommy and that he didn’t deserve to deliver his eulogy, to which Laurel says that Tommy loved him, Oliver however(being Oliver) walks away.
In the present, Thea and Alex go out for dinner where they are attacked by the impostor Black Canary, who blames Alex of working for ”them”. She is about to kill Alex but is stopped in time by Thea, and runs away. Oliver on Thea’s cue goes after her and finds her out to be Evelyn Sharp, one of the people kept imprisoned by Darhk at Reddington(S04 E09).
Lance goes into full denial mode and seeks Nyssa out to help him bring Laurel back using the Lazarus pit. Nyssa however tells him that she has destroyed the pit and can’t really help him. Lance says he will find another way to bring Laurel back.
Diggle in his rage against Andy and himself goes after Ruvé Adams to kill her but Oliver intervenes and prevents him from doing something he would regret. Adams in return issues arrest warrant against all vigilantes. Evelyn sharp attacks Adams publicly, but Oliver steps in and convinces her to drop her weapons because Black Canary would never do something like this.
Finally, Laurel’s funeral takes place and Lance comes to terms with the fact that Laurel is never coming back. Oliver is present at the funeral this time and delivers the eulogy, revealing that Laurel was the real Black Canary, so as to preserve her memory of everyone in the city as a hero. In the final flashback, Oliver drops a letter at Laurel’s doorstep and leaves for Lian Yu.
In the last scene of the episode,Flash(Barry Allen) comes to attend the funeral and Felicity asks Oliver to find the way to beat Darhk and to kill him(“that SOB”, in her own terms) for Laurel and for this city.
One thing I really loved about this episode was the subtlety with which the flashbacks were introduced. Tommy’s funeral was not given much value in either S01 or S02. This episode however made up for that little fault on the Writers’ side. However the real heart winning part was when Oliver declares Laurel to be the Black Canary and reveals her tombstone. She was a hero with a mask but she was also a hero without it and the world needed to know it. Let us know your thoughts on it.
