Taboo Season 1 Episode 4 review: Can’t Tom Hardy die?
Now I can safely say that we are not going to see Delaney’s life in Africa as I expected, which is sad. Taboo Season 1 Episode 4 was good in all its debauchery, twisted romance between Delaney and Zilpha and the immortality-kind-of-strength James has! James is playing it well when it comes to handling East India Co. and the Crown simultaneously which makes the show interesting, although the motive behind all this which was revealed in the previous episode is still nagging me.
Another thing which surprised me was the fact that the show indeed has some supernatural elements which was depicted in an utterly creepy way here. Their relationship is a literal taboo but this episode showed how sick it is. The hoodoo thing happening with her while she was in bed was supernatural and creepy to the core. It showed that Delaney wants her bad; the question remains that whether she wants him or not. The condition of women in this show is not that good it seems. Lorna too is being used as a puppet to meet selfish needs. As she has a claim in Nootka Sound, Delaney just can’t get rid of her. She gets threatened by Coop who almost rapes her when East India Co. comes to her rescue, courtesy Delaney. And same is the case when it comes to The Crown and the East India Co. Taboo Season 1 Episode 4 introduces us to a new character, Cholmondeley (Tom Hollander). He is a chemist who Delaney hires to make gunpowder for him. Tom Hollander is eccentric and steals the show in this episode. His tete-a-tete with Delaney are humorous to say the least and his screen presence is electric! Now let’s talk about the best sequence of the episode; the brutal fight between Delaney and that giant of a man who tried to kill him. Ohh what a gory scene it was; you don’t see a man getting dragged by bale hooks often, do you? And Delaney survives a bash on the head with a mallet. I mean, what is wrong with James? Is he immortal, or inhuman? Anyway, the scene engrosses you big time and you can’t get your eyes off the screen, thanks to some intense choreography and background score by Max Richter.
The episode ends with that carnival of drugs and debauchery where Thorne gets drunk and picks up a fight with Delaney; how foolish of him. Delaney kicks his ass and afterwards, Thorne challenges Delaney for a duel which kicks up the excitement. Taboo Season 1 Episode 4 is exciting and things seem to be going good for the series. The set pieces are gorgeous as usual, hats off to the production design. Tom Hardy continues to give an excellent performance in the lead with brilliant support from the other cast members. Half the season done, Taboo hangs between average and excellent.
